In this example, the pawns on f6 and h6 are weak. Black could castle, of course; but Black prefers to leave his rook where it is to defend the h-pawn, as well as the h7 square.

24.Rd1 is more natural.

And here we have the first fruits: Black plants himself on the outpost.

Now Black has the better of it: he might just close up the queen’s wing with …a6-a5 and …Bb4, rendering White’s passed b-pawn worthless. It’s not hard to envision Black’s major pieces invading, either. But White, in a tough position, commits a decisive error and the game ends in a few short moves.
